The Google Nexus One
By now everyone has heard of Google’s ‘Nexus One’ (not official name)(Update: Google has filed a “Nexus One” trademark) the cell phone that will revolutionize the industry. Here’s what we know:
- It’s being built by HTC, but Google was heavily involved in the designing process
- It’s running Android (obviously) 2.1
- People from Google are using these phones right as I type
- Based off of the HTC Passion, or a variant of
- Possibly contract free phone, with a decent price.
And now I’d like to quote a previous article I wrote, Google Chrome: Is Something Bigger Going On?:
If you’ve been keeping up with the rumors, Google is reportedly going to unveil a true Google phone. What’s interesting is that the rumors are saying that it will be a complete data-only phone, that makes calls through Google Voice/Gizmo5 VoIP. We must also remember that while Google was looking to buy the 700MHz spectrum a few years back, they didn’t. So this phone would have to come out partnering on some one’s network….Which means Google would have to buy spectrum, or do an Amazon and use a carriers network without really pushing the network.
OK, some of that article is now outdated. If you read it, I said that for Google Chrome, it was in Google’s best interest to go with either Sprint’s or Verizon’s 3G network. It’s possible that may still hold true, but it difinately is not the case for the Nexus One. When it went through the FCC, it was found out that it has the radio frequincies to work on both T-Mobile’s and AT&T’s 3G netowks. The only logical reasoning I can find for this is that the Nexus One will be a world phone, and if it’s being sold unlocked, it has to be that way.
