Facebook to launch Mail service?
Facebook has close to four hundred million users.
Microsoft, the world’s largest email-providing business, has just over two hundred fifty million users.
If Facebook created an email service, it would instantly become the largest email provider in the world… by one hundred and fifty million users.
What– Gmail? Pshh.
Code named ‘Project Titan’ on the inside, Facebook is apparently working on scraping their message service (a-la “the inbox”) and starting from the ground up.
As of now, the messages we receive on Facebook are sent directly to our inboxes; these inboxes don’t really have a “true identity”, and can only receive messages from other Facebookers.
Facebook’s trying to change that: according to early reports, Facebook is working our vanity urls to be used for an email client. According to these reports, users’ emails will be the same as their profile vanity name (i.e. their profile be found at www.facebook.com/vanityname and their email at vanityname@facebook.com).
Facebook will effectively replace the current inbox with the Facebook email service allowing users to send and receive emails to any other address directly from Facebook. This built-in email service will include IMAP and POP support, allowing users to link their Facebook inbox to mail clients like Outlook, Mail, in addition to mobile devices.
I’m definitely interested to see how this all plays out– one thing’s for sure facebook.com/sexydancergirl246 is not going to be happy with her new Facebook email address
