PSN Is Down & Turning On Your PS3 Can Be Fatal

The PlayStation Network has been sent into a downward spiral, starting with something that sounds like it is straight out of Star Wars:  Error 8001050F.

People have reported lost trophies, data loss, and even system crashes since the PlayStation Network unexpectedly went down today.  Sony hopes the network will be fixed within twenty-four hours. In the mean time, they’re warning all people with fat PS3s to not power on their system (this problem is isolated to the older PS3 models).Sony has sent out the following message about the topic.

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today; this problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Users have been experiencing a variety of different errors including:
* The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
* Trying to sign-in to the PlayStation Network results in the following message: “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
* Trying to launch a game results in the following message: “Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game.” Trophy data may disappear.
* Trying to set the time and date of the system via the Internet results in the following  message:”The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
* Attemps at playing certain rental video content have failed before the exparation date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have one of the above listed models, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Stay tuned and follow the PlayStation Network on Twitter for more updates.  Hopefully, when this all clears up we can put up a top 20 hilarious tweets regarding the failure =).
