BREAKING: Apple to Remove Restrictions on Adult Content and Other Obscenities this March? Hugh Hefner, Playboy CEO, says yes (update: Playboy spokeswoman says no)

If you use an iDevice, you’re probably familiar with Apple’s App Store, the one-stop-shop for mobile applications, or programs. You probably also know, then, that Apple’s virtual shelves are free from sleazy applications, mainly apps that feature “adult content,” (read: porn).

These limitations, of course, are all apart of Steve Job’s vision: a world free from porn! If you recall, some eight months ago, Jobs himself told a Gawker reporter:

In reference to the iPad: “Yep, freedom from programs that steal your private data. Freedom from programs that trash your battery. Freedom from porn. Yep, freedom. The times they are a changin’, and some traditional PC folk feel like their world is slipping away. It is.”

Well ladies and gentlemen, it looks as if Steve may have changed his mind. According to Playboy’s CEO Hugh Hefner (Playboy of course is perhaps the most widely-read pornographic magazine in the world), the publication will be available on the iPad this March.

But, that’s not all. Hef says that all of the back issues of Playboy as well as current issues will be available for sale. I’ve gotta wonder: how is that going to work out? Is Apple working on a new digital cataloging system?

It gets even better: Playboy on iPad will be uncensored. BAM– let the speculation begin!

I’ve gotta’ believe that these tweets foreshadow the end of Job’s walled garden in some capacity. What say you?

Update - In an interview with Fox News, Playboy spokesperson Theresa Hennessey shed some light on Hefner’s comments, saying that the magazine’s archives will be coming to the iPad via a web-based subscription service. “We are releasing a web-based subscription service with Bondi Digital Publishing that will give users access to every issue of Playboy both past and present,” said Hennessey. “The service will be iPad-compatible and will utilize iPad functions.”

  1. I bet that it will be an iPad 'enhanced' web site. (Probably accessed via a login/subscription form) Not a iPad app.

Does Hugh know the difference. No one has asked him if it will be a proper app that you can buy in the appstore.
